George Edward Newberry was a man-of-letters who had a distinguished career as an author, scholar, and teacher. Born into an old Massachusetts family, he attended Harvard, and became professor of literature at Nebraska immediately after graduation. He simultaneously established himself as a writer, publishing numerous poems and short pieces as well as several monographs, eventually becoming a popular and influential author, culminating in a productive stint as professor of literature at Columbia. A talented and diverse writer, his idealism was shattered by World War I, but his contributions to American literature and scholarship remain notable.
