Pierre Fontaine was an architect for the government and, along with his associate Percier, remodelled and built many of the famous Parisian constructions, first for Napoleon Bonaparte, then for Louis-Philippe until his resignation in 1848. Both monarchs wanted to document the royal domains; the volume Saint-Cloud (second official residence of Bonaparte) was part of that series.
