Thea Astley, novelist and short story writer, was born in Brisbane and educated at All Hallows and University of Queensland. She was a school teacher until 1967, then taught at Macquarie University, Sydney, 1968 to 1980. She has won a number of awards, including the Miles Franklin Award. She was made AO in 1992, and granted an Hon. D. Litt. by University of Queensland.
