Charles Hartwell Bonesteel (b. April 9, 1885, Fort Sidney, Nebraska-d. June 5, 1964) served as a U.S. Army officer in both World Wars I and II after being commissioned in the infantry from West Point in 1908. He served with 7th Division, AEF in 1918, and was an instructor at West Point from 1919 to 1924. He graduated from both Command and General Staff School and the Army War College, and was an instructor at the Infantry School from 1932 to 1935. He reached the rank of brigadier general in 1940, then major general in 1941. During World War II he served as commanding general of 5th Infantry Division, commander of Iceland Base Command, commander of the Infantry School, commanding general of Western Defense Command, then inspector general in the European Theater of Operations from 1944 to 1945. He retired from Army service in January 1947.
