Hales, John, 1584-1656
Variant namesJohn Hales was a learned and popular English scholar and educator. Born in Bath, he was educated at Oxford, and was elected as fellow at Merton, and later Eton. Ordained as a minister, he preached frequently, published sermons, and otherwise devoted himself to scholarship. Universally praised as a scholar, he was also notably amiable and much sought-after for his learned and witty conversation. Numerous religious tracts published posthumously show a practical, open-minded, and slightly unconventional view of the church.
