Victor B. Scheffer (1906-2011) was born on November 27, 1906, in Manhattan, Kansas. He received his bachelor's degree in 1932, and his PhD in zoology in 1936 from the University of Washington in Seattle. From 1937-1940 he worked as a biologist for the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey and later worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from 1940-1954. From there he worked at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, 1954-1969; and a lecturer for the Ecology Department at the University of Washington, 1966-1972. He was named chairman of the Marine Mammal Commission, serving from 1973-1976. His first book was published in 1959, one of thirteen books and over one hundred scientific pamphlets and articles. He died on September 11, 2011.
