Paul Galdone was born in Hungary, ca. 1907. He immigrated to the United States in 1928 and studied art at the Art Student's League and New York School of Industrial Design. Galdone illustrated his first children's book, Ellen MacGregor's Miss Pickerell Goes to Mars, in 1951. Throughout his long and prolific career, he illustrated dozens of books by many authors as well as his own adaptations of classic folk and fairy tales and fables. Paul Galdone is perhaps best known for his illustrations for the Eve Titus' Anatole in 1957, and the second in 1958 for Anatole and the Cat.
Paul Galdone's adaptations of many classic tales are noted for "their colorful images and intricate detail" as well as their ability to capture the "mood" of a story and frequently their sense of humor and "satiric wit." Paul Galdone worked in a variety of media, most often using pen or ink and wash. He drew inspiration from nature and some of the classic illustrators such as Arthur Rackham and Walter Crane. Paul Galdone died November 7, 1986 and in 1996 posthumously received the 1996 Kerlan Award for his contribution to children's literature.
