Tenney, Claudia, 1961-
Variant namesClaudia L. Tenney (born February 4, 1961) is an American politician. A member of the Republican Party, she has served as the U.S. Representative for New York's 22nd congressional district since 2021; she previously represented the district from 2017 to 2019.
Born in New Hartford, New York, she graduated from New Hartford High School before earning a B.A. from Colgate University and J.D. from the University of Cincinnati. Early in her career, Tenney was the only American employed by the Consulate General of Yugoslavia. She was a co-owner of Mid-York Press, a commercial printing company started by her mother's family in 1946. Before owning her own law firm in Clinton, New York, she was a partner at the Utica-area law firm of Groben, Gilroy, Oster and Saunders. In January 2001, Tenney began co-hosting "Common Cents", a radio and television program that airs weekly across Oneida and most of Herkimer County. In February 2010, she began co-hosting "First Look" on WIBX 950 Radio. In 2002, New York State Assemblyman David R. Townsend Jr. won reelection and asked Tenney to become his legal counsel and Chief of Staff.
After Townsend launched a campaign for Oneida County Sheriff in 2010, Tenney decided to run for his Assembly seat, becoming the first woman to represent the district after winning the Republican primary and running in the general election unopposed. In 2014, Tenney ran for the Republican nomination for New York's 22nd congressional district, running to the right of incumbent Republican Richard Hanna and losing the June 24 primary to him by six points. In 2016, Tenney again sought election; Hanna announced his retirement weeks later. Tenney won the Republican primary and general election. In her 2018 bid for re-election, Tenney lost to Democrat Anthony Brindisi. In her 2020 bid, Tenney won the Republican nominiation to challenge Brindisi; on February 5, 2021, Tenney was declared the winner of the race, re-assuming her office six days later.
In the 117th Congress, Tenney sits on the House Small Business Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
