Commissioned by the government of Colombia. Originally composed for chorus and orchestra, 1939, with a text by Guillermo Valencia. First performance of that version took place simultaneously at the Teatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro, and at the Teatro Colón, Bogotá, 12 October 1941.
