Strauss, Robert S.
Variant namesRobert S. Strauss was born on October 19, 1918 in Lockhart, Texas. He received an LL.B. from the University of Texas in 1941. He was a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1941 to 1945; and a partner in the law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, Dallas, 1945 to 1977 and 1981. He held a number of positions with the Democratic National Committee (DNC), including committeeman from Texas, 1968 to 1972; member of the executive committee, 1969 to 1977; treasurer, 1970 to 1972; and chairman, 1972 to 1977. Strauss held a number of positions during the Carter Administration, including Special Trade Representative with rank of ambassador, 1977 to 1979; Special Counselor on Inflation, 1978 to 1979; President Carter's personal representative for Middle East negotiations, 1979 to 1981; and chairman of President Carter's reelection campaign, 1979 to 1981. Strauss received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980, and served as U.S. Ambassador to Russia from 1991 to 1993.
