Born in Philadelphia in 1877, John R. Neill was working as a newspaper illustrator when he began his collaboration with L. Frank Baum on the Oz books. Between 1904 and his death in 1943, Neill illustrated the Oz books and Baum's other fantasy works, and even authored three Oz books himself.
