Born and raised in New York City. Graduate, Dartmouth College, 1951. Served in U.S. Naval Intelligence during the Korean War. PhD, Columbia. Taught English at Dartmouth College, 1963 to 1993. Advisor for The Dartmouth Review. Right-leaning syndicated columnist and speech writer for Presidents Nixon and Reagan. Became senior editor of The national review in 1969. Author of nine books.
