Karla Kuskin was born July 17, 1932, in New York City. She began writing and drawing at an early age. Her first book, Roar and More, was written as part of the requirement for her B.A. degree from Yale U. She had to create and print the book using a small press at the university. The book was subsequently published successfully. Themes for her books grew out of her New York childhood and her own experiences as a parent. Many of her books are self-illustrated, and she thinks of herself primarily as an illustrator. Her work has won many awards and honors.
