Rupp, Adolph, 1901-1977
Variant namesRupp was born in Halstead, KS, in 1901. He attended KU from 1919-1923 and played basketball under the legendary KU coach, Forrest C. "Phog" Allen, where he was a player on the 1923 Championship team. He was hired to coach at the University of Kentucky in 1929, where he stayed until his retirement in 1972. During his 42-year career, Rupp won four championships, earned a winning average of .822, and did not coach a single losing season. In 1976, the new basketball arena at the University of Kentucky was named in his honor. He died in 1977.
