Paul Howe Shepard, Jr. received a Ph.D. from Yale University and taught natural philosophy and ecology at Pitzer College and Claremont Graduate School in California. His writings on the interrelationships between humans and the environment are provocative, literary, and mystical, as much as scientific. Shepard died in July 1996.
