The Brisbane High School for Girls was founded by Miss E A Fewings in October 1899 with opening term in 1900. She arranged with the authorities for the University of Cambridge a scheme whereby examinations for the school were set and marked by the Cambridge University Board of Examiners. The scheme was instituted in 1902. The school moved from the grounds of the City Tabernacle, Wickham Terrace to "Summerville House" in Christmas holidays 1919-1920. The name came to distinguish it from the State High School built nearby.
