Lemuel Cornick Shepherd, Jr. (b. Feb. 10, 1896, Norfolk, Va.-d. Aug. 6, 1990), received his commission from the Virginia Military Institute in 1917. He reached the rank of brigadier general in July 1943, then major general in September 1944. He was commanding general of Fleet Marine Force Pacific from June 1950 to December 1951, then commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps from January 1952 until his retirement in January 1956.
