George Holmes "Buddy" Tate was a jazz tenor saxophonist and clarinetist. Tate was born in Sherman, Texas in February of 1915. He was associated with Count Basie from 1934 to 1949. From 1953 to the 1974, Tate secured a residency for his own band at the Celebrity Club in Harlem. He played also with several other bands, including Benny Goodman, traveled through the festival circuit in Europe, made numerous recordings, and remained active well into the 1990s. Tate died in Arizona in February 2001.
