Shippey, Lee, 1884-

Lee Shippey was born in Tennessee, 1884; worked as proofreader for Kansas City times; served as a correspondent in France during WWI for the Kansas City star; free-lance writer in Mexico; joined Los Angeles times in 1927, writing daily "Leeside o' LA" column for 22 years, and also wrote Seymour family weekly columns; wrote several books, including The great American family (1938), It's an old California custom (1948), and The Los Angeles book (1950); published his biography as The luckiest man alive (1959); wrote weekly columns for the San Diego Union and Del Mar Surfcomber; died Dec. 30, 1969 in Encinitas, CA.

A writer for the Los Angeles times from 1923-1958, during which time Shippey authored the popular column "Leeside o'L.A.: Personal Glimpses of Famous Southlanders" and a weekly column entitled "The Seymour Family," which examined American family life in a humorous light. After retiring from the L.A. times, Shippey relocated to Del Mar, Calif. During the 1960s, he authored several columns appearing in the San Diego union, including "Surfside o'Del Mar," "Southwest Corner," and "Lee Shippey Says." Two of Shippey's published books, The great American family (1938) and It's an old California custom (1948), were adapted for the theater. Shippey died in Encinitas, Calif., on 30 Dec. 1969.
