Edward Ellice was a merchant-banker, landowner, and politician according to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online. He was born in London, England, and although he had extensive land holdings in New York and Canada, spent most of his time in the U.K.

The 1850 U.S. Census lists Joseph Rosseel as a land agent in Oswegatchie, N.Y. The 1860 U.S. Census lists him as a "gentleman" in Ogdensburgh, N.Y., born in Ghent, Belgium.
