Adrian John Pieters (1866-1940) was born on November 18, 1866, in Alto, Wisconsin. He received his Bachelor's degree in 1894 and his PhD in 1915 from the University of Michigan. From 1900-1906, he was botanist-in-charge of seed and plant introduction and distribution in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He traveled and studied in Germany from 1910-1912. For a short time he was professor of botany at the University of Michigan, 1912-1915, and went on to become an agronomist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1915-1938. He was a member of the American Society of Agronomy and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He retired in 1938, and died on April 25, 1940.
