Attorney and member of U.S. House of Representatives, 3rd and later 11th California District (1942-1956). Received J.D. from University of California (1915). Served as pilot in 104th Aero Squadron of American Expeditionary Force and won Silver Star Medal (1917-1918). Collection includes World War I correspondence from Johnson to fiancee, Elizabeth Alpers. Became Deputy District Attorney of San Joaquin County, Calif. (1920-1921), City Attorney of Stockton, Calif. (1923-1933) and member of Stockton Planning Commission (1934-1941). Elected to U.S. House of Representatives (1942), Johnson was member of House Armed Services Committee. In that capacity he toured Hawaii and Italy (1945) to survey war damages.
