Harold Amos, 1919-2000, BA, 1941, Springfield College; MA, Harvard University; PhD, 1952, Harvard Medical School Division of Medical Sciences, was named Instructor in the Department of Bacteriology and Immunology at Harvard Medical School in 1954 and became Maude and Lillian Presley Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics in 1975, and emeritus in 1988. Amos' research focused on animal cell culture, bacterial metabolism, and animal and bacterial virology. Amos was the first African-American to chair a department at Harvard Medical School. He directed the Minority Medical Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation during the 1980s and 1990s.
