Edward Clifford Anderson (1815-1883), was born in Savannah, Georgia, the ninth child of George Anderson (1767-1847) and Elizabeth Clifford Wayne Anderson (?-1818). In 1834, he entered the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of Lieutenant before retiring in 1850. A prominent businessman and planter, Anderson served three terms as Mayor of Savannah (1853-1856; 1865-1869; and 1873-1876). He served as a C.S.A. agent during the Civil War, successfully running Federal blockade of the Georgia coast in the ironclad Fingal, and then serving as commander of the Savannah River batteries. After the war, Anderson served as a director of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, the Central of Georgia Railroad, and the Southern Bank. In 1841, he married Sarah Williamson, daughter of John Postell Williamson and Sarah McQueen Williamson (ca.1321-1894). They had three children, Mary, Edward Maffitt (1843-1923), and Georgia.

Edward Clifford Anderson (1815-1883) of Savannah, Ga., was the son of George Anderson and Elizabeth Clifford Wayne Anderson. He married Sarah McQueen Williamson (1816-1884) and with her had five children: Nina, Edward Maffitt, Georgia, and twins Sallie W. and Richard.

Anderson was an officer in the United States Navy during the 1830s and 1840s, but apparently resigned to become a planter in Georgia, residing in Savannah. During the Civil War, he served as a Confederate Army officer, initially as a purchasing agent in England and later commanding the river batteries in the Georgia Military District with headquarters in Savannah. After the war, he was mayor of Savannah, representative of Hope Mutual Insurance Company of New York, and director of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad Company and the Central Railroad and Canal Company of Georgia.
