Loránd Eötvös was a Hungarian physicist and mathematician. He attended the University of Heidelberg between 1867 and 1870. From 1873 he was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; subsequently he was the president of the Academy between 1889 and 1905. In 1871 he lectured at the Budapest University of Sciences, and later he became the rector of the University. In 1950 the University of Budapest was renamed Eötvös Loránd University in his honor. Today he is recognized as one of the important forerunners of the theory of relativity and Einstein published material on Eötvös' work.
