Earl Wilcox Snell was born in Olex, Oregon on July 11, 1895 and completed his education at Oregon Institute of Technology in Portland. He served in WWI and entered state politics as a Republican in 1927. After tenures as speaker of the Oregon House and as Secretary of State between 1933 and 1942, Snell was elected governor. He was the incumbent when he died in an airplane crash on October 29, 1947.
