In 1856 Offenbach announced a competition for a one-act opéra comique from a libretto by Léon Battu and Ludovic Halévy, to be played at the Bouffes-Parisiens. The jury was unable to agree on a winner out of the six finalists, of whom Demersseman's work was one; eventually Bizet and Lecocq were awarded a shared first prize, and their works were staged alternately in April 1857.
