Franz Liszt was born in Doborján, Hungary (now Raiding, Austria), on October 22, 1811, the son of Adam Liszt (1776-1827) and Maria Anna Lager (1788-1866). He began playing and performing piano at a young age. Liszt studied with Carl Czerny and Antonio Salieri in Vienna, Austria, and with Anton Reicha and Ferdinando Paër in Paris, France. He toured Europe as a virtuoso performer in his teens, twenties, and thirties. From 1848 to 1861 he lived in Weimar, Germany, where he composed under the patronage of Grand Duke Carl Alexander. He then moved to Rome, Italy, where he joined a Catholic religious order in 1865. He lived primarily in Rome, Weimar, and Budapest for the remainder of his life, though he continued to tour Europe as a performer. Franz Liszt died in Bayreuth, Germany, on July 31, 1886.
