Educated at Charterhouse and Christ Church College, Oxford, Robert Curzon traveled widely in Egypt and Palestine in search of manuscripts during 1834 and visited Mount Athos in 1837. He was later attache ́at the British Embassy in Constantinople. His Visits to the monasteries of the Levant appeared in 1849. Curzon was also a student of the history of handwriting. He enjoyed the friendship of the book and manuscript collector Sir Thomas Phillipps and access to Phillipps' ever-growing library of manuscripts at his Middle Hill estate in Worcestershire. This collection included many Middle Eastern manuscripts.
