Byrd, Richard Evelyn, 1920-1988.
Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr. (1920-1988) was the only son of the polar explorer Admiral Richard Byrd. He served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant and accompanied his father on his last two Antarctic expeditions, Operation Highjump and Operation Deep Freeze. After the death of Admiral Byrd in 1957, Richard Byrd Jr. dedicated himself to the preservation of his father's memory. He was also an avid collector of antique automobiles.
