Sommer was born in Italy, raised in Brazil and later became a naturalized American citizen. He studied landscape architecture, art and photography and was influenced by Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston. He studied music in the 1930s in Los Angeles. In addition to his musical drawings, he composed scores which were intended for performance.
