Prince Christian was born in Augustenburg Palace, Denmark on 22 January 1831 to Christian August, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg and Countess Louise Sophie of Danneskiold-Samsøe. He married Princess Helena of the United Kingdom, the daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and made their home at Frogmore House in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
