Poet and author Honor Moore (1945- ) was born in New York City, the eldest of nine children of Jenny (McKean) and Paul Moore. After graduating from high school in Indianapolis, Ind. (1963), she attended Radcliffe College (B.A. 1967) and the Yale School of Drama (1967-1969). Moving to New York, she worked in theater, wrote poetry, and became part of the women's movement. After the death of her mother from cancer in 1973, Moore wrote a play in verse, Mourning Pictures, which opened at the Lenox Arts Center in Massachusetts to rave reviews. It later was staged in New York City, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Chicago, and London. In 1977 she compiled the first collection of contemporary women's plays entitled The New Women's Theatre: Ten Plays by Contemporary American Women. Her play, Years, received a staged reading in 1978.
Two months at the MacDowell Colony allowed Moore the time to create a chapbook, Leaving and Coming Back (1979), and her poems have appeared widely in journals and anthologies. She has published two books of poems: Memoirs (1988), and Darling (2001). Her biography of her grandmother, painter Margarett Sargent, appeared in 1996. Moore has taught writing widely and has served on the boards of directors of PEN American Center, Feminist Art Institute, and Chrysalis, among others.
