Mahlon D. Manson served as a captain of the 5th Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican War. After the War he served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1851-1852. In 1861 he was instrumental in raising the 10th Indiana Regiment and a short time later was promoted to colonel. In 1870 he was elected to Congress and served from 1871-1873. He served as State Auditor, 1879-1881 and was Lieutenant Governor, 1885-1886. He also was a collector for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service for Indiana, 1886-1889. He was active in various veterans organizations and was a member of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument Commission.
