Rev. Winterbotham wrote the history of America from Newgate Prison in 1796. "A Philosophical View of the Present Situation of the United States of America" that was accepted as the main work on America history at that time. Additionally his book contained the first reference to baseball in the new world. He stated that "Bat and Ball was common ... ". His works contained maps including first known map of Illinois.
