Larrabee, William, 1832-1912
Variant namesRepublican state senator (1867-1885), governor of Iowa (1886-1890), chairman of the Board of Control of State Institutions (1899-1900), and successful entrepreneur from Clermont, Iowa. Larrabee's business interests included mills, farms, banks and manufacturing. Political issues of particular interest to him included the regulation of railroad rates, prohibition of liquor sales and the placement of state institutions under the charge of boards of control. In 1861 he married Anna M. Appelman. The couple built the Montauk mansion on a hill above Clermont in 1874. Here they raised their seven children. The home was occasionally opened by the Larrabee family to tourists following the death of William in 1912. The couple's daughter Anna continued this practice until the late 1960s, preserving the home's original furnishings. In 1976 the home was donated to the State Historical Society of Iowa.
