Edward D. Berkowitz was born on January 11, 1950 in Passaic, New Jersey. He received his AB from Princeton University, 1972; received MA from Northwestern University in 1973; and Ph.D. in American History from Northwestern University in 1976. Berkowitz was Assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, 1977-1980. He served as a senior staff member of the President's Commission for a National Agenda for the Eighties, between 1979 and 1981. His work with the commission consisted of serving on Panel IV, Government and the Advancement of Social Justice. Since 1982, Berkowitz has served as Professor of History at George Washington University. He has authored numerous books and articles on such subjects as the history of American social welfare policy, Social Security, history of health care, and disability policy.
