Pianist and teacher (1906-1995).
Born in Kansas City, she was raised in Los Angeles where she studied with Desider Vecsei. She was a student of Josef Lhevinne at the Juilliard Graduate School, 1925-1929, and later studied in Europe with Artur Schnabel. After winning the Naumburg Award in 1928, she concertized extensively in Germany (1930-31) and later played with many major U.S. orchestras. As a member of the Juilliard School piano faculty, 1954-1990, she taught Edward Aldwell, Augustin Anievas, Jeffrey Biegel, John Bayless, Daniel Epstein, Horacio Gutiérrez, Panayis Lyras, Ken Noda, Jon Kimura Parker, and Jeffrey Swann among many others. Previous to joining Juilliard she had been the teacher of Byron Janis. In later years, Marcus became renowned for the master classes and workshops she gave throughout North America and, in the early 1980s, in Tromsø, Norway.
