Kenneth Prewitt was born March 16, 1936, in Alton, Illinois, a son of Carl K. and Louise (Carpenter) Prewitt. He married Anne Biggar on September 6, 1963. He later married Susan Vogel, an art historian and film-maker. He received a BA from Southern Methodist University in 1958; a MA from Washington University 1959; and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1963. He received a Guggenheim fellowship for 1983 through 1984. Prewitt served as assistant professor of political science from 1963 through 1964 at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, and served as visiting professor of political science from 1964 through 1965 at Makerere University College, Kampala, Uganda. He began his career at the University of Chicago in 1964, where he served as assistant professor to professor of political science, from 1976 through 1979 and director of National Opinion Research Center from 1979 through 1984. He served as president of the Social Science Research Council, from 1979 to 1985 and from 1995 to 1998. From 1985 through 1995, he served as Senior Vice President of the Rockefeller Foundation, where he directed the international Science-Based Development program involving activities in Asia, Africa and Latin America. He served as Director, Bureau of the Census from October 21, 1998 to January 2001, and as dean of the graduate faculty of political and social science at the New School University from April 2001 to July 1, 2002.
