Hide Profile

Helaine Victoria Press (HVP) was founded in Los Angeles in 1973 by Jocelyn Cohen and Nancy Poore. An artist and printer, Cohen moved to rural Indiana where she and Poore ran HVP, researching, printing, and distributing postcards on the history of women. Postcards were collected, images were located at repositories, and some were then republished with additional information under the HVP imprint. Postcards were sold individually or in sets, including: Latin American Women and U.S. Latinas, Women in Ecology, Sisters of the Harlem Renaissance, and Women in the American Labor Movement. While in Indiana, Cohen and Poore also worked to restore 12 acres of rural countryside to a balanced habitat for wildlife. In the late 1980s Cohen moved to San Francisco where she received an M.F.A. from the Academy of Art College in 1991. Although HVP ceased publishing in 1990, its work is carried on at the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, New York, where vistors can visit the Suffrage Press Print Shop and create a hand-crafted publication.
