Miller, Merle, 1919-1986
Variant namesMerle Miller was born on May 17, 1919 in Montour, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa from 1935 to 1938 and 1939 to 1940, and the London School of Economics from 1938 to 1939. From 1940 to 1941 he served as Washington correspondent for the Philadelphia Record. Miller then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an editor of Yank magazine, from 1941 to 1945. For this service he earned a bronze medal with oak-leaf cluster. After the war, he also served as contributing editor at Time magazine, 1945, and editor at Harpers magazine from 1947 to 1949. Miller authored the following works over his career: Island 49, 1945; We Dropped the A-bomb, 1946; That Winter, 1948 (his first published novel); The Sure Thing, 1949; The Judges and the Judged, 1952; Reunion, 1954; A Gay and Melancholy Sound, 1961; A Day in Late September, 1963; Only You, Dick Daring! (with Evan Rhodes), 1964; On Being Different, 1972; What Happened, 1973; Plain Speaking, An Oral Biography of Harry S. Truman, 1974; and Lyndon: An Oral Biography of Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1980; and Ike the Soldier: As They Knew Him, 1987. He also was a contributor to the following works: The Best from Yank, 1945; Yank: The GI Story of the War, 1947; A Treasury of Great Reporting, 1949; Women Today, 1953; Highlights from Yank, 1953; Writers Roundtable, 1955; Writing in America, 1960; screenplays and TV plays. In addition, he interviewed Harry S. Truman from 1961 to 1962, as a writer for a television series on Truman, to be produced by David Susskind's company, Talent Associates. Merle Miller died in Danbury, Connecticut on June 10, 1986.
