Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (b. 6 August 1844, Berkshire, England-d. 30 July 1900, Coburg, German Empire) was the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He entered the Royal Navy at age 14 in 1858 as a midshipman; he was promoted to captain in 1866. On 23 January 1874, he married the Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, daughter of Emperor Alexander II of Russia and Marie of Hesse and by Rhine.
