American poet, novelist, and editor Lewis Warsh was born in New York City in 1944. He received his B.A. and M.A. from City College of the City University of New York and has taught at various institutions since 1973, including Queens College, Farleigh Dickinson University, SUNY Albany, and Long Island University. In 1965, Warsh attended the Berkeley Poetry Conference where he met poet Anne Waldman; during the late 1960s, Warsh was active among a group of New York poets and writers centered around The Poetry Project Project at St. Mark's Church, including Ted Berrigan, Bernadette Mayer, Ron Padgett, Joe Brainard, and George Schneeman. In 1966, along with Waldman, Warsh co-founded and edited Angel Hair Magazine and Angel Hair Books, which published over 70 volumes of poetry and fiction from British and American authors. Since 1977, Warsh has served as the editor of United Artists Books.

Warsh has published more than fifteen collections of poetry, including The Suicide Rates (1967), Hives (1979), Money under the Table (1997), and Inseparable: Poems (2008); six novels, including A Place in the Sun (2010); three autobiographical works; and a translation of Robert Desnos's Night of Loveless Nights (1973). In 2002, Warsh co-edited an anthology of the Angel Hair Magazine in 2002 with Waldman titled Angel Hair Sleeps with a Boy in My Head: The Angel Hair Anthology .
