The Michigan Archival Association was founded in 1958. It was reorganized under a formal constitution in 1970. Its expressed purpose is to promote the preservation and use of historical materials and the professional competence of archivists and to cooperate with the Society of American Archivists to offer professional programs at the state and local levels. MAA publishes an organizational newsletter, entitled Open Entry, and other resources serving to aid archivists, allied professionals and archival researchers. Membership is open to archivist and allied professionals. Membership-wide meetings, cornering topics of common professional interest, are held on a regular basis. Members elects the governing board.

The Michigan Archival Association (MAA) was established in 1958. Its membership consists of archivists, historians, librarians, and private individuals interested in preserving Michigan's historic documentary record. The MAA meets twice a year for the purpose of maintaining professional competency and keeping abreast of the changes in the archival profession brought on by new technology, current trends in historic research, and financial problems faced by archives and libraries.
