Historian, academic and social commentator. John Bradley Hirst is a former reader in the Department of History, La Trobe University. He has written several books including The sentimental nation: the making of the Australian Commonwealth (2000), Sense & nonsense in Australian history (2005 and 2009), The Australians: insiders & outsiders on the national character since 1770 (2007), and, Freedom on the fatal shore: Australia's first colony (2008). Hirst is a member of the Film Australia Board and the Council of the National Museum of Australia.
