Samuel Warren was born in Wales, and studied medicine in Edinburgh before becoming a lawyer, being called to the bar in 1837 in London. He had a long career in law, and also in politics, serving in Parliament, acting as recorder in Hull, and being named Master of Lunacy, presiding over inquiries into an individual's sanity. Warren had an interest in writing at an early age, and authored several works on legal topics; he was best known, however, as the author of three novels, including the immensely popular TenThousand a-Year, a satire on the reform movement that overcame conservative politics, with two-dimensional characters and an unbelievable plot to become one of the best-selling novels of the 19th century.
