Associate professor of social sciences and deaf studies in NTID's cultural and creative studies department, Patti Durr began teaching at NTID/RIT in 1990. Durr has been instrumental in developing Deaf Studies courses at NTID and is actively involved in the community. In 2004, by rigorous peer review of student nominations, she was awarded the RIT Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching.

In 2007, Deaf People + WWII website was launched by the National Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology. It includes interviews, transcripts, articles, and films of Holocaust survivors, and seeks to preserve and foster the teaching, scholarship, and research of the experiences of the deaf and hard of hearing in the Holocaust. The website is the result of several years of gathering materials about Deaf people's experiences related to World War II for Deaf Studies courses taught at NTID/RIT. Much of the content was organized by Professor Patricia Durr and makes up the bulk of this collection.
