Lawyer and resident of Georgetown, S.C.; son of Thomas Mitchell (d. 1784) and Anne Rothmahler Mitchell of Georgetown District, S.C.; graduated from Harvard in 1802; admitted to the S.C. Bar in 1808; served as a member of the S.C. House of Representatives representing Horry District (1808-1809) and Prince George Winyah Parish (1814-1819); served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1821-29), after defeat in 1830 he was reelected on an anti-Nullification platform and returned to the U.S. House (1831-1833); some sources spell Mithell's middle name as "Rathmahler."
