Lieu, Ted, 1969-
Variant namesTed W. Lieu (born March 29, 1969) is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has represented California's 33rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2015.
Born in Taipei, Taiwan, he immigrated with his family to Cleveland, Ohio at the age of three. Lieu graduated from St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland before earning a B.S. in computer science and B.A. in political science from Stanford University and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. After graduating, Lieu served as a law clerk to Judge Thomas Tang of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He joined the United States Air Force in 1995 and served four years on active duty as a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps. After serving active duty, Ted joined the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson as a litigator. On March 5, 2002, Lieu was elected to the Torrance city council, serving there until winning a 2005 special election to fill the 53rd Assembly district following the death of incumbent Mike Gordon. Lieu sought the Democratic nomination in the 2010 California Attorney General election, finishing fourth. He won a February 15, 2011, special election to fill the 28th Senate district following the death of incumbent Jenny Oropeza.
Lieu was the Democratic candidate for the 33rd congressional district, formerly represented by Henry Waxman, who retired in 2014 after 40 years in Congress. After placing second in the top-two primary, Lieu was elected to the first of his four terms that November. In Congress, he has been an outspoken proponent for tackling climate change. Lieu has been a leader in Congress against ethnic and racial profiling, including discrimination against the LGBT community and hate toward the Asian American community. He serves as Whip of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Vice Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus, and Co-Chair of the Cloud Computing Caucus.
