E. G. Dyson, born in Victoria in 1865 wrote verse and short stories for the Argus, Leader, Punch and Bulletin. His publicatiions include Rhymes from the mines and other lines (1896) Hello soldier! Khaki verse (1919), Below and on top (1898) part of which was reprinted in 1929 as The golden shanty. His novels were The gold stealers (1901) and The roaring fifties (1906) Dyson died in 1931.
